In Their Words - Owadan Tourism - Turkmenistan

Profiled in this month’s “In Their Words,” is Owadan Tourism’s Christina Tarasova representing Turkmenistan.

On Their Decision to Participate in the Travel & Adventure Show Series
Travel on “the Great Silk Road” has grown in popularity immensely in the past years. Many people have traversed the Chinese section of the Silk Road, and are now keen to take
their journey further west, via Central Asia to the Mediterranean Region.  As Central Asia covered a central and vital section of all caravan routes in these days, there is a wealth of interesting historical sites to explore. In Turkmenistan and in Uzbekistan alone, 6 historical sites have obtained UNESCO World Heritage status, which is a good indication of the importance of the region in historical perspective. Places such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Merw and Kunya Urgench – all capitals of local empires during the early to late Middle Ages - have long spoken to the imagination of travelers. With our presence at the travel shows series and the practical information we can provide for both group and customized tour travelers, we hope to bring travelers closer to realizing their wish to explore that spectacular historical region.

On Their Expectations for the D.C. Show
We hope and expect to welcome many interested members of the public here, and to be able to answer their questions or take away some of their concerns over whether and how to travel to Central Asia. As we provide tourism and travel services on site, we are in the best position to provide the most up-to-date information on how a journey could be designed, in terms of accommodation (from 5-star hotels to camping in the desert), transportation (from domestic flights in Boeing aircraft to local train travel and ATV/4WD vehicles), and recommended local excursions.

Next to the general public, we hope to give out a message to US adventure tour operators as well – both those with booths at the shows as well as those visiting – that the Central Asian region is becoming an increasingly popular travel destination worldwide. We hope that our personal presence will incur confidence and could form the beginning of increasing cooperation with US tour operators.

On Generating Buzz
As a local incoming DMC, we came to the shows this year with a very modest booth, and limited financial and logistical means. Yet, our little booth draws attention of visitors, due to the fact that we have covered the entire side and back walls with spectacular posters of the most exciting places to visit in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Four members of staff of Owadan Tourism (Turkmenistan) and Samarkanda Tours and Travel (Uzbekistan) will be at the Washington DC Show to answer your questions.

Observing the various booths and theaters at the LA show - such as the cooking and dance theaters -have given us plenty of ideas on how we could yet further increase our region’s travel profile during prospective 2015 Travel & Adventure Show Series. And thanks to the assistance and support of the Show organizers this year, we are able to add an extra last-minute feature to the upcoming Washington DC Show. On Sunday 23 February, we hope to see a good audience during our presentation “Adventures on the Silk Road: Experience Travel Through Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan,” which will be held by us at the Destination Theater.

On the Show’s Attendees

The attendees that visited our booth in LA were exactly the kind of people we were hoping to be there. We spent two very full days talking with people that were already fascinated with travel into the Central Asia, but that just needed some more reassurance or information on the practicalities of traveling there. Not only were we able to give them relevant information and offer the possibility of contacting us directly for their service requirements on site, but also offer them leads to various US-based partner tour operators for whom we already act as local service agent.  By being present at this show we learned as much about the profile of the attendees as they hopefully learned from us about traveling in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
